The Best Early Labor Day Mattress Deals (2024)

Birch

Birch is made by the same folks over at Helix, but the Birch line is eco-friendly and makes some of the best organic mattresses out there. Birch is running a 25 percent off sale plus two free pillows for any mattress purchase (use the code LDW25 at checkout). It’s similar sale to what we saw Birch run around the fourth of July and Memorial Day, but still a solid deal. But if you want a better deal, furniture store Raymour & Flannigan is also running a sale and currently selling Birch’s Luxe Natural Mattress for $200 cheaper than Birch. Both have the more affordable Birch Natural for the same price, though.

The Best Cooling Sheets for Hot Summer Nights, Tested and Reviewed (2024)

My summertime sadness is waking up all night because I am too damn hot. Nothing makes me miserable like the heat, especially at night. Hot nights are unfortunately the price I pay for skipping winter down here in Southern California, but some folks are just hot sleepers no matter the temperature or where they live. Heat can adversely affect your sleep quality, which can affect your health, so it’s important to stay cool at nighttime; if you’re not about to splurge on a cooling mattress, it might be worth considering cooling sheets.

But what makes a good cooling sheet? What exactly is a cooling sheet? These bed sheets typically improve airflow, allowing your body to dissipate heat better than traditional cotton sheets. Linen is a popular choice and is quite breathable, whereas other materials have moisture-wicking and temperature-regulation properties. After sleeping on nearly every sheet there is for weeks, I’ve concluded that linen and cotton percale make some of the best cooling sheets. But if you want a softer material (or hate percale like me), there are other options too. (All the prices are for queen size.)

What Are Cooling Sheets?

There’s a lot of terminology thrown around in the world of cooling sheets and cooling mattresses. Temperature regulating! Airflow! Moisture wicking! Phase-change material! Most of the time, these features come back to how breathable the sheets are. Breathability means moisture can better evaporate, and “temperature-regulating” usually means the sheets are breathable enough to release the heat and moisture from your body.

What makes sheets breathable? Cotton, flax linen, and bamboo have great breathability, but not all sheets are made equally, so material alone isn’t a guarantee. Weave, as in percale’s one-over-one threads versus sateen’s three-over-one, and weight (including thread count) of the bedding comes into play. Higher thread counts are less breathable, and tighter weaves will be less breathable too. The yarn within the fabric is also important, as well as how twisted it is—a higher twist makes for a smoother, cooler feel to the fabric, while a loose twist isn’t as smooth and can trap heat.

Some companies treat sheets with something called phase-change materials, or PCMs, which are substances that absorb and release energy to either heat or cool an area. “PCMs create a microclimate,” says Karen Leonas, a professor of textile sciences at the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. Excess body heat is absorbed by these materials and then released to the body when it’s cool.

These treatments can raise the price of cooling sheets, but they’re not super popular yet, and it’s hard to determine how well incorporated it is into the fabric. “PCMs go through thermal cyclic testing and have shown to last a long time,” Leonas says. “If this is a surface treatment, there is the possibility that some of the microcapsules will be lost due to abrasion.” Parima Ijaz, CEO of Pure Parima, agrees and says these treatments sometimes only last up to 10 washes. There are only a handful of sheets on the market that tout their use of PCMs, and our guide focuses on breathable materials and weaves rather than these treatments. It’s worth noting that PCMs will last much longer on a foam mattress, according to Leonas. If you’re still sweating at night after switching to cooling sheets, try a cooling mattress.

6 Best Mattresses for Back Pain, Tested and Reviewed (2024)

Nearly a decade ago, I started waking up with back pain, or even full on throwing my back out at night. It turns out I have two permanent conditions in my spine: scoliosis, a sideways curvature in my spine that developed in my mid-twenties (usually teens develop it, but I’m just special), and spondylosis in my lower back, which is abnormal wear and tear on the cartilage in the spine. Both were causing me serious pain overnight and in the morning, but it turned out my flimsy mattress was the secondary culprit. It didn’t offer the support I needed.

I tried everything: a mattress pad, knee pillows, and mattresses that ranged from super soft foam to firm planks. Some of these things worked, some didn’t. I, or another WIRED reviewer, slept on the mattresses below for at least seven nights each, and monitored how they affected our back pain during the night and following morning. My husband also gave me his feedback, even though he isn’t plagued with chronic back problems.

After all these nights of sleeping on the job, I’ve found which mattresses left my back aches and pressure pains in the past. 6 Best Linen Sheets (2024): Breathable, Soft, Affordable

I fell in love with linen bedding years ago. I bought a bright yellow linen duvet I was certain would bring my bedroom together. The yellow was just a phase, but sleeping on linen just clicked. Linen has a rougher texture and a lived-in look, which can turn some folks off from sleeping on it. But the fabric is breathable and dries fast, so you’ll stay cooler as you sleep and avoid sweaty sheets. (That’s why linen apparel is popular in the summer.)

Linen is also strong and durable, softening up (slowly) after each wash without becoming thinner or weaker. Linen tends to be more expensive since high-quality linen will last a long time, so a linen sheet set is an investment not only in staying cool as you sleep (which is very important for sleep quality) but also in gorgeous bedding you can enjoy for years. I love sleeping on linen so long as it isn’t too scratchy, which is one of the many things I looked for while testing and searching for the best linen sheets. What’s So Great About Linen?

Linen is a woven fabric made from flax plants. It is a highly breathable material so it keeps you cool during the summer months as it doesn’t trap heat. It’s great for people who sleep hot. It’s rougher at first than a simple cotton set, but it should soften up the more it’s washed. Linen often has a higher price than other sheets, but it’s generally more durable than percale or cotton, so a good sheet set should last a long time.

They’re not for everyone, but if you love linen apparel, you’ll probably love linen sheets. If you’re unsure, start with a single piece (like a duvet or flat sheet) and see what you think. Most of the options we recommend come in a linen set, but you can also buy many of these pieces separately, allowing you to try a linen pillowcase or fitted sheet before wading into a full-on linen bed.

What Is Lyocell Fabric, and Is It Eco-Friendly?

I sleep on a lot of bedding. It comes with the territory when you test bed sheets and comforters for a living. I’ve slept on everything from bamboo and silk to plain-weave cotton, but there’s a term I’ve seen quite often in bedding materials that I didn’t know much about: lyocell. So I had to know. What makes it different from other bedding materials? Is it more comfortable to sleep on? Are the cooling and eco-conscious descriptions I often saw accurate? What’s Tencel, and is it different from lyocell?

Lyocell is a cellulose-based, man-made fiber similar to fabrics like rayon with purported eco-friendly benefits in the manner it’s manufactured. Is it the magic solution to eco-friendly sheets? No. But it’s a move in the right direction, and there’s plenty of opportunity for lyocell to become an even more eco-conscious choice.

Lyocell has a cellulose structure, similar to both rayon and cotton, so it isn’t a synthetic fabric. But while we harvest cotton from a plant, lyocell and rayon are man-made fibers that take wood pulp and transform it into a fiber and eventually fabric. “The process is called wet spinning,” says Karen Leonas, a professor of textile sciences at the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University. “It takes wood pulp and makes a slurry, and then makes it into a filament, then into a fiber.”

The process for the two is different enough that rayon and lyocell are labeled by the Federal Trade Commission as separate fibers. One of the biggest differences is output. Making rayon uses different, harsher chemicals that can’t be reused, while lyocell is known for its closed-loop production processes that reuse almost all of the solvent to make more lyocell.

Leonas says lyocell is a better choice than rayon because of the different chemical choices in its manufacture. Namely, she says rayon production uses carbon disulfide, which is toxic to both the environment and the people working on the wet spinning process. Lyocell production does not. “There are solid found technical reasons from the chemical point of view that make it more environmentally friendly and less toxic to workers,” she says.

The words Tencel and lyocell are often used together, or sometimes interchangeably. Where lyocell is the fabric, Tencel is the brand. It’s owned by the Lenzing Group, which makes a specific trademarked Tencel Lyocell fabric. “It’s like cornflakes versus Kellogg’s,” Leonas says. You can find lyocell in all kinds of bedding, from sheets to our favorite mattress.

8 Best Mattresses for Side Sleepers (2024): Budget, Luxe, Tested by Experts

There’s no such thing as the best mattress for everyone. Not when there are so many different sleeping positions. However, most people are side sleepers. The numbers vary by study and how rigidly you define a side sleeper, but between half and three-quarters of people sleep on their side. (The older and heavier you are, the more likely you are to be a side sleeper, and it’s recommended that pregnant women sleep on their side.)

Firm mattresses are nice for back sleepers, but side and stomach sleepers may typically prefer a softer bed with some give for hips and knees. I am mostly a side sleeper. If you had asked me about my firmness preferences before I started reviewing bed-in-a-box mattresses, testing dozens for weeks over the year, I would’ve told you the softer the better. Indeed, if you’re a side sleeper you’re likely to gravitate toward cushy memory foam mattresses. But, as I’ve sampled more styles and religiously tracked my sleep on my Apple Watch, I’ve found that the best mattresses for side sleepers offer both cushion and support. The recommendations below have enough give to let your hips sink in for a natural spinal alignment without making you feel like rolling over is an uphill battle. Everything I recommend was tested for at least a week of real-life testing. All of the prices shown are for queen-size models.

Casper Adjustable Base Max Review: Customized Angles and Massage

I love the feeling of getting into bed at night, but for a while, my sleep wasn’t restful. I was tossing and turning, and waking up with back pain, so I replaced my old bed with the Casper Original Hybrid Mattress. That model was recently replaced with Casper’s Dream Hybrid—the Original has been ghosted from Casper’s site, but the remaining stock can still be found on Amazon until it runs out. My back hasn’t ached since, but something was still missing.

I have long dreamed of the ability to adjust my mattress, angling myself to comfortably read or work on my laptop, or propping my head up on nights when a cold or allergy-induced runny nose would otherwise keep me awake. Because the Casper mattress was such a success, I turned to the brand for help here too. For the last few months, I’ve been sleeping on Casper’s Adjustable Base Max. All it took was a minor foot raise to feel all the tension in my back melt away. This is how the other side lives.

Sleep on It

Casper has three adjustable frames, all controlled by a simple remote (we are good with a remote and hated the app-controlled Sleep Number adjustable bed). Most people would be fine with the base option, at about $1,100 for a queen-size bed, with head and foot adjustments and a zero-gravity mode, which adjusts your body to evenly spread pressure and eliminate neck or back pain—NASA found this sleeping position to be ideal for astronauts dealing with pressure in space. The $1,500 Pro adds two-zone massage, with one vibrating motor at the top and one at the bottom, and USB ports for phone charging. The Max that I tried is a whopping $2,500 when not on sale. I don’t need the Max, but I do very much appreciate its extras.

The Max gets four-zone massage with three intensity levels. Instead of one motor vibrating the whole top section and another at the bottom, each side gets its own head and foot motor, four in total. If you share a bed with someone, both of you can experience it fully. It’s more of a vibration than an actual massage—it doesn’t have nodes that get into your muscles like a massage chair, of course—but it is genuinely relaxing despite itd having to travel through the frame and thick mattress. Although it can be loud. The zero gravity feature brings your upper body to a 120-degree angle and your feet to a 45-degree angle with your knees bent. I felt my body release every ounce of tension here and made every person in my family try it too. Zero gravity is supposed to be good for sleeping, but because I’m a combination sleeper who rotates between my side and stomach, I prefer it for relaxing at the end of the day.

The Max has a head lift like the other two do, which adjusts your upper body from flat to about 20 inches from the frame, and it also offers pillow tilt. That means the top half of the head piece also adjusts, bringing your head in position for comfortably watching TV or reading. Otherwise, you’re more positioned to look at the ceiling if you are laid completely back. The foot of the bed raises the bottom of your mattress about 10 inches from the frame. If you find a head and foot position you really love, there are two preset buttons on the remote so you can save them for easy adjusting later—say one for lounging and one for sleeping. I love the under-bed lighting that provides just enough brightness to find something or to light your way to the bathroom at night, but not enough to wake up your partner or blind your sleepy eyes.

5 Best Cooling Mattresses (2024): Hybrid, Soft, Foam, and for Couples

There are a ton of mattresses on the market that claim to have cooling benefits. Here are a few others I’ve tested and liked, but not as much as the options above.

Casper Snow Hybrid for $1,745: When you come across a mattress with a name that includes “snow,” your expectations for cooling effects are naturally high—and this mattress indeed lives up to that expectation. With a medium feel, the Casper Snow Hybrid incorporates a cooling material alongside three patented HeatDelete bands, engineered to “act as thermal highways and effectively dissipate heat,” according to Casper. The patented Snow Cover is cool, and I consistently woke up sweat-free when testing this bed. Structurally, this hybrid bed combines poly foam, memory foam, and pocketed coils, and provides targeted support at the hips, waist, and lower back to alleviate pressure, making it ideal for back and stomach sleepers. Keep in mind that upon unboxing, this mattress may need some time to chill (pun intended). I noticed it came out of the box slightly misshapen from its packaging and emitted a faint plasticky scent. After about two days, the mattress was ready to go, the smell gone, and settled into its intended neat rectangle shape.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid for $1,595: The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is marketed as firm, and that’s exactly what you should expect. Crafted with patented AirCradle memory foam, the mattress features concentrated cushioning in the center, strategically intended to support your lower back. Since I’m only 5’2″, the middle-back cushioning didn’t hit where it intended to. Despite its firmness, I didn’t find this mattress particularly exceptional, especially with its cooling properties. Despite incorporating a triple-phase LuxeCool system and cooling gel-infused memory foam, the cooling effect didn’t stand out.

BedJet 3 for $429: I haven’t tested the BedJet myself yet, but WIRED reviewer Christopher Null did and liked it a lot (8/10, WIRED Recommends). This device uses a large blower under your bed to blast hot or cool air beneath your covers. If you like your existing mattress but find yourself sleeping hot, this could be just the ticket.

Whichever firmness level you choose comes in two heavy boxes so you’ll need to zip both pieces together to equal one thick bed that stays remarkably cool.

The Leesa Sapira is our runner-up for its soft-yet-supportive feel and cooling top layer. It might not be quite as nice as the Helix, but we kept going back to it during testing. This is the sale price we typically see.

Avocado pretty much always has a 10 percent off code on its site, so this is $100 off rather than $300. Still, it’s more than we usually see on our favorite organic mattress. Writer Scott Gilbertson said it was the only one he and his wife agreed on, somehow working for her preference of soft mattresses and his preference for firm ones. It’s made from organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton. And according to the company, it contains no polyurethane, fire retardants, memory foam, or chemical adhesives.

Because it’s medium-firm, most sleeping styles should like it. A pillowy Euro top and an extra layer of blended cashmere make it exceptional at temperature regulation. You need to select the ultimate level with a plush pillow top to get the version we tested. This isn’t a huge discount, but it’s one of the rare mattresses that isn’t on a constant “sale.” It’s a classic innerspring, so it won’t come rolled up in a box like foam beds do, but it has an excellent balance of soft and supportive.

If you want an organic mattress for your kids, you probably don’t want to drop a thousand dollars or more. If they’re still ok sleeping on a twin-sized bed, we recommend the Kiwi mattress. We’ve seen it drop lower, reaching $679 and even sometimes $649, but this is the typical sale price. It’s made using certified organic cotton, wool, and latex.

Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

Enter code MEMORIAL at checkout. This is the usual price we see the Bear Elite at, but it does go up to $1,614 and has occasionally reached its full price. It’s a great mattress that we recommend most for side sleepers. It’s firmer than most, but it gave the right amount of sag to our tester’s hips and elbows while still supporting them on their side. The quilted pillowtop feels like a luxury you don’t normally see for this price.

We recommend this bed in our Amazon mattresses guide, but it isn’t currently discounted there. Still, it’s a bed that oozes luxury for a not-so-luxurious price (in mattress world anyway). There’s enough support for various sleeping positions and the gel top layer keeps it cool. However, our tester noted that the middle of the bed was slightly elevated than the sides even after the recommended air-out time.

Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

Zinus is a popular cheap mattress brand and this one has thick, high-density foam for pressure relief. But we think it’s best for heavier people. Our tester didn’t sink into this mattress at all, so there was no back support. If you’re buying for a kid or you’re particularly light, maybe consider another option.

Super cheap mattresses aren’t usually the best long-term, unfortunately. But if you’re young with a back that doesn’t hurt yet, or you need to outfit a guest room, you won’t need to spend a fortune. The Best Price Mattress is very soft and we slept comfortably. We were also impressed by its 10-year warranty and that the foam is CertiPUR-US certified, so it’s made without formaldehyde or flame retardants. The price varies, but it hovers around $219 on Amazon.
