Medical device manufacturer Roemmler is on a mission to remove PFAS from the medical sector — starting with our skin.
In order to maintain our own personal health and preserve our environment for generations to come, tackling and overcoming the challenge of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is crucial.
The challenge
Used for many technological applications, including semiconductors, mobile devices, and data centres, PFAS are commonly found in the world of technology. However, the durability that makes these substances useful is also what makes them problematic. PFAS don’t break down naturally, and, once released, can accumulate in soil, rivers, and oceans; spread globally through air and water systems; and contaminate drinking water supplies. This persistence means tech-related PFAS pollution can last for decades.
Scientific research has linked PFAS exposure to a variety of health issues, including immune system suppression; hormonal disruption; increased risk of certain cancers; and liver and thyroid problems. Because PFAS build up in the body over time, even small exposures from tech manufacturing can become dangerous.
Roemmler’s mission to rid the medical sector of PFAS
After many years of research, medical device manufacturer Roemmler has created its first PFAS-free product. Since many skin adhesive applications contain PFAS chemicals, we have specifically targeted products that enable applicators to stick on human skin for several minutes carrying devices or alike for treatments to be conducted in a very direct way.
As these replacement chemicals require re-thinking the entire technology stream to make the product work for its considered intent, we have to start from scratch with little to no recycling of the previous process steps developed over the last decades. No compromise of properties or concession of the known properties are possible in a world of narrow specifications and consumers.
We wanted to supply customers with what they are already used to. So, we concluded that all this is possible with a truly blank paper in front of the R&D team. It also requires extended duration time for deep evaluations of the PFAS-free alternatives and their long-term effects.
