Researchers at the University of Melbourne have developed a new approach to protecting critical infrastructure from the destructive effects of wildfires, offering a practical way to keep vital environmental monitoring systems operating during extreme fire events.
The study was prompted by the widespread loss of water monitoring stations during Australia’s devastating 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires.
The destruction of this equipment disrupted environmental data collection for weeks, limiting emergency agencies’ ability to assess drinking water quality, monitor flood risks, and support ecosystem recovery.
By designing fire-resistant enclosures and cable protection systems using commercially available insulation materials, the research team demonstrated that relatively simple and affordable upgrades can significantly improve the resilience of monitoring equipment exposed to wildfire conditions.
Wildfires expose vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure
Environmental monitoring stations play a crucial role before, during, and after major bushfires. They provide real-time information that helps authorities assess water safety, understand changing environmental conditions, and coordinate emergency responses.
However, these remote installations are often highly vulnerable to intense heat and direct flame exposure.
During the Black Summer bushfires, at least 17 water monitoring stations were destroyed, resulting in extended gaps in environmental data at a time when accurate information was most needed.

Testing a practical wildfire protection system
The University of Melbourne researchers evaluated specially designed instrumentation cabinets and cable conduits constructed from readily available insulation materials rather than expensive, custom-engineered components.
Laboratory testing subjected the equipment to extreme radiant heat and direct flames that replicated wildfire conditions.
Throughout the experiments, the protective system successfully maintained internal temperatures below the operating limits required for sensitive electronic equipment.
The findings indicate that straightforward engineering modifications can substantially improve the survival of monitoring systems without requiring complex or prohibitively expensive redesigns.
Wider benefits beyond water monitoring
Although the research focused specifically on water monitoring stations, the protection strategy could be applied across a much broader range of critical infrastructure located in fire-prone environments.
