Georgia and Wichita Falls–Duncan Local Sections receive sustainability programming grants

The American Chemical Society Committee on Environment and Sustainability (CES) awarded a total of $1,000 in Local Section Sustainability Programming Grants to the Georgia and Wichita Falls–Duncan Local Sections this fall. Each received $500 to support events aimed at promoting awareness within the chemical community of the essential role chemistry plays in addressing sustainability challenges.

The Georgia Local Section, in partnership with the Chattanooga section, cohosts an annual meeting focused on innovation and impacts in the chemical industry. The first meeting, held in August 2023, addressed topics as diverse as flooring materials and photovoltaic cells. This year’s meeting in October emphasized advanced recycling and discussions on the economic value of waste and the effects of removing chemicals from traditional waste streams. It featured a panel with experts from academia, industry, government, and the community at Dalton State College.

The Wichita Falls–Duncan Local Section organized an environmental chemistry workshop on Oct. 5 that featured academic presentations, professional talks, and informational booths on local environmental issues and initiatives. Open to regional students and the public, the event included a water flow demonstration, composting starter kits, and children’s activities led by ACS Student Affiliate members. Booths provided information on topics such as proper disposal of prescription drugs, composting, and water treatment processes.
