Hurrey’s statement

I am honored to stand for election as director-at-large of the American Chemical Society. For more than 25 years, ACS has been central to my professional identity—as a student, industrial chemist, volunteer leader, and advocate for our community. My candidacy is grounded in a commitment to ensuring ACS remains the premier professional home for chemists across all sectors, particularly those in industry, while positioning the society for long-term strategic impact.

My career spans over two decades in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, where I have held senior leadership roles across research, development, and executive management. I currently serve as chief scientific officer at PKx Bio and previously held vice president and executive director roles in product and pharmaceutical development, leading cross-functional teams, managing multimillion-dollar budgets, and guiding programs from early development through commercialization. This experience has given me firsthand insight into the needs of industrial chemists and the importance of aligning scientific innovation with business strategy, regulatory policy, and societal impact.

In parallel, my long-standing service to ACS reflects a sustained commitment to leadership and governance. I have served in numerous elected and appointed roles, including chair of the Committee on Chemistry and Public Affairs (CCPA), where I developed a strong understanding of how ACS policy priorities and engagement with government stakeholders translate into real-world impact. My experience also includes multiple leadership roles within the Division of Business Development and Management—including chair, treasurer, program chair, and councilor—and chair of the Younger Chemists Committee, where I supported career development and programming across a broad membership. These roles have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of ACS governance, finance, and operations, as well as the diverse needs of our membership.

As a director-at-large, my primary responsibility will be fiduciary oversight and strategic governance—ensuring that ACS resources, programs, and policies align with the society’s mission and long-term vision. In this role, I will work with the rest of the ACS Board to evaluate strategy, assess program effectiveness, and ensure that member needs are reflected in high-level decision-making. I will bring the perspective of an industrial chemist and experienced executive to these discussions.

If elected, I will focus on three priorities within the scope of ACS Board governance.

First, strengthening engagement and retention of industrial members. At the board level, this means advocating for data-driven evaluation of member needs and ensuring that ACS investments align with delivering value to chemists in industry. I will support strategic initiatives that enhance career development, technical exchange, and networking opportunities, while encouraging stronger alignment between ACS offerings and the organizations that employ chemists. Strengthening relationships with industry will help ensure ACS remains relevant to both individuals and employers.

Second, supporting effective policy positioning and government engagement. While committees and staff lead policy development, the board sets priorities and ensures alignment with the society’s mission. Drawing on my experience with CCPA, I will contribute to shaping policy focus areas that reflect scientific integrity and the realities of the chemistry enterprise. I will advocate for maintaining ACS as a trusted, nonpartisan voice while ensuring that the perspectives of industrial chemists are represented in these discussions.

Third, ensuring strong strategic governance and fiduciary stewardship. The ACS Board’s core responsibility is to guide ACS through sound, forward-looking decision-making. My executive experience in strategic planning, budget oversight, and operational leadership will help me make an impact as I serve on the board. I will focus on ensuring that ACS resources are allocated to programs that deliver measurable member value, that initiatives are evaluated for impact and sustainability, and that the society maintains operational excellence and financial strength.

Throughout my career, I have been driven by a belief that chemistry is both a scientific discipline and a powerful engine for societal progress. ACS plays a unique role in connecting chemists across sectors, advancing innovation, and supporting the next generation of scientists. As director-at-large, I will bring a collaborative, pragmatic, and governance-focused approach grounded in experience, service, and a deep commitment to our community.
