Lorsbach’s statement
Innovation, fiscal stewardship, and service have shaped my career and commitment to the American Chemical Society. I seek election as director-at-large to bring a proven record of scientific leadership, financial judgment, and community building in service of ACS’s mission, members, and long-term sustainability.
Professionally, I have spent more than two decades leading innovation at the intersection of chemistry, business, and global impact. As a senior research and development and portfolio executive, I have defined research strategy, prioritized investments, and allocated capital across portfolios that balance scientific risk, long-term value, and near-term returns. I regularly make difficult, data-driven decisions to ensure fiscal discipline while sustaining innovation pipelines—experience directly aligned with the ACS Board’s responsibilities for financial oversight, budget review, and approval of new initiatives.
Innovation is the constant thread in my career. I have led organizations from ideation through commercialization, integrating enabling technologies, external partnerships, and global teams to deliver sustainable chemical solutions. My publication and patent record reflect this focus, as does my long history of collaboration with academia, start-ups, contract research organizations, and international partners. These networks extend well beyond ACS and position me to expand interdisciplinary engagement and bring new communities into the society.
I am passionate about the future of chemistry education and research. I believe ACS can play a stronger role as a funding catalyst for academic research and graduate students, complementing traditional sources while strengthening connections between universities, industry, and the society. I am equally committed to bridging generations by connecting Younger Chemists Committee members with retirees whose experience, mentorship, and institutional knowledge remain invaluable.
My ACS service began at the local section level, shaping my understanding of how the society delivers value closest to members. I served as chair of the Indiana Local Section, followed by eight years as an ACS councilor. Nationally, I have chaired the Committee on Local Section Activities, led within the AGRO Division, organized award symposia, supported editorial efforts, and delivered ACS outreach talks through the Speaker Directory, including my “Chemistry of Bourbon” presentation.
As director-at-large, I will bring strategic vision, financial rigor, and an inclusive mindset to strengthen ACS for future generations.
