James G. Speight, 86, of Laramie, Wyoming, died July 21, 2026.
“Throughout his career, James taught at the University of Utah, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Mosul. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Missouri and at the Technical University of Denmark, and as the Methanex Distinguished Professor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. His honors included election to the Russian Academy of Sciences and the academy’s Gold Medal for work in petroleum science, Scientists Without Frontiers Gold Medal, and Einstein Medal for the field of geologic sciences. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, perseverance, international contributions to science, dedication to teaching, and commitment to mentoring future generations.”—James Speight, son
