The Cleveland Local Section of the American Chemical Society is seeking nominations for the 2027 Edward W. Morley Medal. The award recognizes significant contributions to chemistry through achievements in research, teaching, engineering, research administration, or public service; through outstanding service to humanity; or through industrial progress. The award is regional and is presented at the Cleveland Local Section’s May 2027 meeting. Recipients receive a medal, an honorarium of $3,000, and covered travel expenses for the medalist and their spouse to the banquet, where the medalist will deliver the Edward W. Morley Lecture.
Nominees must live within 250 miles of Cleveland, which includes the US and Canada. The nominee’s contributions for which the award is given should have been made when they were a resident of this area, or if a major contribution was made elsewhere, the nominee should have continued to make contributions while a resident of the area. Nominators can be members of ACS, the Canadian Society for Chemistry, or the Chemical Institute of Canada.
Nomination materials must include a letter of nomination and a curriculum vitae (CV) that includes the candidate’s education, professional experience and activities, awards and honors, and offices held as well as specifics on their significant contributions. The letter of nomination should highlight the significant contributions and include a list of references to the candidate’s most important contributions, an evaluation of the significance of these achievements, and a list of the nominee’s most significant publications and patents where appropriate. (The specific reference for every publication or patent is neither required nor encouraged.) Additional letters of support from colleagues in the nominee’s field of expertise who can speak directly to the strength of contributions made by the nominee are also encouraged. Added consideration will be given to midcareer scientists with demonstrated accomplishments and for the promise of continuing significant future accomplishments.
