The UK is entering a new phase in its approach to space, and North East England is unusually well placed to benefit.

The Government’s new UK Space Strategy puts defence, national security and economic growth at the centre of its plans, backed by more than £7.8 billion of investment through to 2030.

Rather than treating space primarily as a scientific or technological endeavour, the strategy takes a more targeted approach, concentrating investment on the capabilities most important to the UK’s security and future economy.

For North East England, that shift could prove significant.

The region already has expertise spanning satellite communications, space surveillance, data, advanced manufacturing, materials, semiconductors, electronics and photonics.

Those capabilities overlap closely with four areas identified by the government for accelerated development: satellite communications, space domain awareness (SDA), in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing, and assured access to space.

The result is a strategy that could create opportunities well beyond companies traditionally regarded as part of the space industry.

A new direction for UK space

The new UK Space Strategy formally replaces the National Space Strategy published in 2021 and represents a more focused approach to how the government intends to develop the sector.

Its central ambition is to establish the UK as a competitive space power, with space policy serving three closely connected objectives: protecting national interests, strengthening defence and national security, and generating economic growth.

That reflects the increasingly important role space plays in everyday life. Communications, navigation, timing, financial services, energy infrastructure and defence all depend on space-based systems.

The strategy argues that the UK therefore needs to strengthen its ability not only to develop and operate space technologies, but also to protect the infrastructure on which the country increasingly depends.

This has led the Government to concentrate resources on four priority subsectors.

Satellite communications will receive particular attention, while SDA will focus on understanding what is happening in orbit. In-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing could open the door to a new generation of space-based industrial capabilities, while assured access to space is intended to strengthen the UK’s ability to launch satellites when and where they are needed.

For North East England, each of these priorities intersects with capabilities already developing across the region.

Satellite communications could open new doors

Satellite communications is one of the clearest areas of overlap.

The strategy includes £2.8bn for strengthening connectivity, including investment in the Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit and SKYNET defence communications programmes.

The government also plans to take a more coordinated approach to buying and developing space technology, beginning with satellite communications. The intention is to use government demand to strengthen domestic supply chains while giving UK companies greater opportunities to win contracts.

That could matter considerably to North East England.

The region has established capabilities in radio frequency and microwave technologies, photonics, advanced electronics and satellite communications. These technologies sit across a complex supply chain, meaning the benefits of increased space investment do not necessarily have to go exclusively to businesses designing or building complete satellites.

Companies developing components, communications technologies, electronics or specialist systems could potentially find themselves serving a growing space market.

This is an important distinction. The expansion of the space economy is not simply about creating more space companies. It is also about bringing existing industrial capabilities into space supply chains.

Space domain awareness puts data and surveillance in focus

Another priority with clear relevance to the North East is SDA.

At its simplest, SDA involves detecting, tracking and understanding objects and activity in space. That includes satellites and space debris, as well as understanding changes and potential threats within an increasingly congested orbital environment.

The UK Space Strategy commits £85m to the National Space Operations Centre and £149m to the European Space Agency (ESA) Vigil mission.

North East England already has expertise in space surveillance, orbital analysis, data and research. That provides a foundation for the region to contribute to a capability that is becoming increasingly important as more satellites and other objects enter orbit.

There is also a wider opportunity here.

SDA sits at the intersection of space, software, data science, sensing and advanced computing. Its development therefore creates potential opportunities for organisations whose expertise may not traditionally have been labelled as ‘space’.

For a region with a broad technology and research base, that cross-sector nature could be particularly valuable.

In-orbit manufacturing could change the space supply chain

Perhaps the most forward-looking of the four priority areas is in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing, or ISAM.

The Government has committed £40m to developing this capability.

ISAM encompasses technologies that could allow spacecraft to be repaired, serviced or assembled in orbit. Over time, it could also support the manufacture of products and materials in the space environment.

The implications extend beyond spacecraft themselves.

North East England has long-standing strengths in advanced manufacturing and materials, alongside capabilities in semiconductors, electronics and photonics. These sectors could provide routes into emerging space supply chains as ISAM develops.

That creates a different kind of space opportunity for the region.

A company does not necessarily need to build a satellite to participate in the space economy. Expertise in precision manufacturing, specialist materials, electronic components or photonic systems can become relevant when new space applications begin to emerge.

As the government seeks to move promising technologies towards commercialisation, those industrial connections could become increasingly important.

Assured access to space

The fourth priority is assured access to space.

The strategy sets an ambition for frequent orbital launch activity from the UK by 2030, with SaxaVord Spaceport supporting commercial, government and institutional launches. It also aims to establish the UK as Europe’s leading launch location for polar and sun-synchronous missions.

The longer-term objective is a resilient launch ecosystem combining UK-based capability with relationships with international partners.

For North East England, this is relevant not simply because of proximity to the wider UK space ecosystem, but because a functioning launch industry creates demand throughout the supply chain.

Launch is one part of a much larger system involving spacecraft, electronics, communications, data, tracking, engineering and specialist manufacturing.

As launch activity becomes more established, opportunities could therefore emerge for companies that contribute to the infrastructure and technologies surrounding missions, rather than operating launch vehicles themselves.

The importance of the North East’s wider industrial base

The most interesting aspect of the new strategy for North East England may ultimately be its emphasis on industrial scale.

The government acknowledges that the UK has produced a growing number of high-growth space companies, but that some businesses continue to face difficulties commercialising technologies and securing customers.

The new approach aims to address that gap by becoming more targeted and interventionist, supporting the commercialisation and growth of businesses considered important to national capability.

That matters for the North East because the region brings together several industrial capabilities that the strategy increasingly values.

Advanced manufacturing, materials, electronics, photonics and semiconductor expertise can all feed into space technologies. Meanwhile, research and academic capabilities can support areas such as orbital analysis, surveillance and communications.

The opportunity is therefore not necessarily to build a standalone regional space economy from scratch. It is to connect existing strengths to a national market that is expected to expand.

Turning strategy into contracts and commercial opportunities

The real test of the UK Space Strategy will not be its ambitions on paper, but what happens as funding moves into programmes, procurement and commercial activity.

That is where organisations such as Space North East England could play an important role.

The regional cluster brings together businesses, universities and institutions across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley. Its role includes connecting companies with funding, expertise, facilities and supply chain opportunities, including organisations that are new to the space sector.

That last point is particularly important.

If the UK Space Strategy succeeds in creating greater demand for British-developed space technologies, some of the companies that benefit may not currently describe themselves as space businesses.

A specialist electronics manufacturer, materials company or photonics developer could find a route into the sector through a space-related contract or partnership.

For regional businesses, understanding where those opportunities sit within the emerging supply chain could be as important as developing new technology.

From regional capability to national strategic importance

The new UK Space Strategy creates a clearer connection between Britain’s security requirements and its industrial ambitions.

For North East England, that connection is significant because many of the capabilities being prioritised nationally already exist within the region in some form.

Satellite communications connect with radio frequency, microwave technologies, photonics and electronics. SDA draws on surveillance, orbital analysis and data expertise.

ISAM creates potential opportunities for advanced manufacturing and materials. A growing UK launch ecosystem could generate demand across a much broader industrial supply chain.

None of this guarantees that investment or contracts will automatically flow into the region. The strategy will need to translate its funding commitments into programmes, procurement and commercial opportunities, while businesses will need to demonstrate that their capabilities can meet those requirements.

But the foundations are already there.

The North East’s opportunity is to position those capabilities within a rapidly changing UK space economy, connecting regional expertise with the government’s strategic priorities.

The next phase of the UK’s space economy

The UK’s space ambitions are moving beyond the question of whether the country can develop world-class space technology. The new challenge is how effectively that technology can be commercialised, scaled and integrated into national capability.

That could create a particularly interesting moment for North East England.

The region has the industrial depth to participate in space without relying solely on traditional space companies, while the government’s four priority areas create several clear points of connection between existing regional expertise and national demand.

As the UK Space Strategy moves from policy into delivery, the North East will have an opportunity to show that its contribution to Britain’s space economy does not have to begin at the launchpad or end in orbit.

It can start in laboratories, universities, factories and technology companies across the region, with their capabilities ultimately becoming part of the infrastructure that supports the UK’s next chapter in space.
