The Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society is seeking nominations for the 40th Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest. The annual award is given to a chemical scientist whose scientific and technical work has significantly contributed to the public well-being, therefore communicating the positive values of the chemical profession.
The award consists of a bronze medal and a $5,000 prize. Travel expenses related to receiving the award will be reimbursed; the award will be presented at the April 2027 meeting of the Northeastern Section. The winner will also deliver an address on the work being recognized, or on work in progress that is also directed toward chemistry in the public interest.
Nominees should be living residents of the US or Canada at the time of nomination, and the public impact of their work should have become apparent within the last 5 years. The subject of qualifying work is not limited to the field of chemistry. The selection committee focuses on the public recognition of the work as well as its scientific or technical significance.
Nominations should be submitted as a single PDF file that includes a letter signed by the primary sponsor with a description of the nominee’s work, plus the names of two cosponsors; short supporting cosponsor statements; the nominee’s professional biography featuring a list of no more than 10 publications; and copies of popular and technical press or feature articles indicative of public benefit and interest.
