The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society has announced the launch of a new journal, ES&T Toxicology, that will publish research related to human toxicology, ecotoxicology, and risk assessment. This includes the effects of substances and other human-made activities on human health, the environment, ecosystems, and their services.
Beate Escher, who is head of the Department of Cell Toxicology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, will be the inaugural editor in chief. She is most known for her work showing that even if individual chemical levels appear safe, when combined in the blood and the in the environment, they can cause harm.
“My vision is for the journal to pioneer the use of data science and systems thinking to integrate toxicology and chemistry in order to protect planetary and human health amid accelerating environmental change,” Escher said in a press release. “ACS ES&T Toxicology will sit at the intersection of environmental and human health, engaging in chemistry-oriented dialogue with environmental sciences, chemical risk assessment, ecology, public health, and epidemiology.”
The hope is that the journal’s research will help drive safer chemicals development, hazard assessment, regulation, and use.
“Introducing ACS ES&T Toxicology is a point of pride for us, as it will provide home for trusted science in the areas of environmental toxicology and ecotoxicology that enables earlier detection of risks and improved preventative chemical design and management,” said Sarah Tegen, ACS Publications senior vice president and chief publishing officer, in a press release.
The journal is set to launch in June.
