The study found that fires occurred 2.5 times more frequently in areas associated with artificial night-time lighting than in climatically similar locations without signs of human activity.

By analysing satellite observations across the Arctic between 2001 and 2013, researchers identified a strong connection between settlements, industrial development and fire occurrence, alongside the well-established impacts of rising temperatures and increasingly dry conditions.

The findings suggest that human activity is an important contributor to wildfire risk across the region.

The results indicate that improving fire prevention around communities, roads and industrial infrastructure could significantly reduce ignition risks.

Researchers say this would not only help protect Arctic residents and ecosystems but could also limit wider climate impacts, as Arctic fires release carbon emissions and accelerate permafrost thaw.

Study examines human influence across the Arctic

Wildfires in the Arctic have traditionally been linked to climate change, with warmer temperatures and prolonged dry periods creating conditions that make fires more likely.

However, expanding industrial activity, transport infrastructure and settlements have received comparatively little attention as potential drivers.

To address this gap, an international research team led by the University of Zurich collaborated with scientists from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Münster.

The researchers conducted the first pan-Arctic assessment of whether human activity is associated with wildfire occurrence.

Because consistent records of human activity across the Arctic are limited, the team used satellite measurements of artificial light at night as an indicator of settlements and industrial operations.

These observations provided a consistent way to compare regions across the Arctic over more than a decade.

Arctic fires were significantly more common near developed areas

The analysis revealed a clear spatial relationship between human activity and wildfire occurrence.

Areas illuminated by artificial night-time lighting experienced Arctic fires around 2.5 times more often than nearby unlit regions with similar climatic conditions.

Fire occurrence also increased the closer an area was to illuminated locations, reinforcing the link between human presence and ignition risk.

The researchers emphasised that climate remains a major factor influencing wildfire activity. Rising temperatures, drought and changing moisture conditions continue to create increasingly favourable environments for fires.

However, the findings demonstrate that these climatic drivers interact with human activities rather than acting alone.

The study also highlights the value of combining environmental observations with indicators of human development to better understand changing wildfire patterns across rapidly evolving Arctic landscapes.

Regional differences highlight importance of fire management

The research identified substantial regional variation in wildfire occurrence around developed areas.

These differences suggest that local fire prevention strategies, emergency response capabilities and land management practices may significantly influence how often fires occur near communities and industrial sites.

Researchers argue that strengthening fire prevention measures around settlements, transport routes, mining operations and energy infrastructure could reduce the likelihood of human-related ignitions while limiting damage when fires do occur.

As economic development continues across the Arctic, integrating wildfire risk into planning decisions could become increasingly important for governments, industry and local authorities.

Growing risks for Arctic communities and ecosystems

The consequences of Arctic fires extend well beyond burned vegetation.

Wildfires can threaten homes, roads, transport corridors and critical infrastructure while disrupting livelihoods and affecting public health through smoke pollution.

They also endanger culturally significant landscapes and fragile ecosystems that support Arctic biodiversity.

Environmental impacts are equally significant. Fires can accelerate permafrost thaw, releasing stored greenhouse gases and altering tundra ecosystems in ways that make future fires more likely. These long-term ecological changes increase the vulnerability of Arctic environments already experiencing rapid warming.

Reducing human-related ignition sources could therefore improve community resilience while helping to preserve ecosystems that are increasingly under pressure from climate change.

Arctic fires have global consequences

The effects of Arctic fires are not confined to northern regions.

Smoke from major wildfire events can travel thousands of kilometres, affecting air quality across continents.

During severe fire seasons, smoke generated in northern Canada has crossed the Atlantic and reached parts of Europe, demonstrating the international reach of Arctic wildfire events.

Beyond smoke pollution, Arctic fires contribute to global climate change by releasing large amounts of carbon stored in vegetation and soils.

As fires accelerate permafrost degradation, additional greenhouse gases can be released, creating feedback loops that further increase global warming.

The researchers conclude that reducing wildfire risk will require both climate adaptation and stronger management of human activities.

As industrial development expands and Arctic conditions become increasingly fire-prone, incorporating fire prevention into land-use planning, infrastructure development and community protection strategies is expected to become an essential part of reducing future wildfire risk.
