Ahead of the release of its recent report looking at PFAS in industry, the Global Impact Coalition shares an overview of its most pertinent findings on achieving PFAS compliance.
Most industrial operators are spending more on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) every year without actually solving the problem. PFAS have become popular due to their water-, oil- and heat-resistant qualities, but are increasingly linked to detrimental health and environmental impacts.
A new report from the Global Impact Coalition (GIC) – a cross-industry accelerator for projects advancing a circular, net-zero future for the chemical value chain – examined technologies to effectively destroy PFAS. The treatment methods companies rely on today, like activated carbon, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis, do not break the bonds of the ‘forever chemicals’; they concentrate them into smaller volumes, leaving a liability that grows with every tightening regulatory cycle. With over $15bn in PFAS settlements already recorded globally and EU limits heading toward 4.4 ng/L, the report explores why permanently destroying the carbon-fluorine bond is becoming the only durable path to compliance.
Supporting companies to phase out PFAS
The GIC Working Group is jointly testing destruction technologies by pooling resources & investment, allowing to de-risk investment and evaluate a broader range of technologies than any single operator could do by themselves. The group has independently assessed more than 15 technology providers, from supercritical water oxidation and electrochemical oxidation to photochemical and plasma processes, mapping which show real promise and which are still unproven at scale.
Key findings
A few things that stood out from the findings were:
- Chain length is the dividing line. Established separation technologies handle long-chain PFAS well but lose effectiveness on short-chain compounds – a gap no commercially deployed system has closed.
- TFA is the systemic blind spot. Trifluoroacetic acid – an ultra-short-chain compound now rising across Europe – slips past nearly every deployed treatment, yet regulators are moving to include it.
- Incineration is running out of road. The only destruction route at scale today needs costly pre-concentration and faces growing regulatory scrutiny.
- Acting early pays off. The cost of waiting ranges from 2.5x in textiles to 120x in batteries; for semiconductors, a missed deadline can mean losing EU market access altogether.
Final thoughts
Testing the full range of technologies across diverse industrial matrices is more than any one operator can manage alone. The group is now moving from lab assessment to pilot-scale validation, and inviting companies with active PFAS compliance obligations to join in.
