Lanarkshire is set to become a major hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure after its AI Growth Zone secured a £300m investment package and Dell Technologies confirmed plans to establish a new Scottish base in the area.
The developments are expected to strengthen the region’s position in the UK’s expanding AI economy. Investment will support the expansion of DataVita’s DV1 data centre operations, including the development of a second facility alongside the existing DV1 site.
At the same time, Dell Technologies will relocate its Scottish team to Mercury House at Lanarkshire’s AI Innovation Park, bringing further technology expertise and employment to the area.
Together, the developments are expected to support more than 3,400 jobs across construction, engineering, technology and AI, while creating new training and skills opportunities.
The investment also aims to provide the digital infrastructure needed to attract further companies to Lanarkshire as demand for AI computing capacity grows.

£300m package unlocks data centre expansion
A central part of the development is a £300m financing package involving ING, ABN AMRO, Santander, the Scottish National Investment Bank, and Siemens Financial Services.
The package has been supported by a £202m guarantee from the National Wealth Fund, allowing DataVita to expand its existing data centre and build a second facility.
The additional capacity will provide the computing infrastructure required by businesses developing and deploying increasingly sophisticated AI systems.
It is also intended to strengthen Scotland’s ability to compete for future investment in a sector where access to reliable, high-performance computing is becoming increasingly important.
Construction is already progressing, with the Lanarkshire site expected to be among the first UK AI Growth Zones to have advanced AI chips installed.

Dell expands its Scottish presence
Dell Technologies’ decision to establish its Scottish base at Mercury House provides another indication of the area’s growing technology ambitions.
The company’s new location within the AI Innovation Park is expected to bring its Scottish workforce closer to the emerging AI ecosystem, creating opportunities for collaboration between technology companies, infrastructure providers and the local skills base.
The move comes as AI investment increasingly depends not only on access to computing power, but also on the availability of skilled workers and suitable infrastructure.
Lanarkshire positioned for AI investment
Lanarkshire’s appeal as an AI location is closely linked to its position within Scotland’s electricity network and access to substantial energy resources.
Data centres require large amounts of electricity, making energy availability a critical consideration when companies decide where to locate AI infrastructure.
The Lanarkshire development is expected to rely overwhelmingly on renewable electricity, benefiting from Scotland’s relatively low-carbon energy mix.
This combination of power availability, infrastructure and access to workers is intended to make the AI Growth Zone an attractive proposition for companies considering future investment in Scotland.

Investment extends beyond technology
The economic impact is also expected to reach communities across Lanarkshire. A £543m community fund is in development, with proposed support ranging from skills and training programmes to after-school coding clubs and funding for local charities and foodbanks.
The emphasis reflects the wider purpose of the UK Government’s AI Growth Zone programme, which is designed to ensure the economic benefits of AI infrastructure extend beyond the technology companies operating within these locations.
As AI adoption accelerates across sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, energy and public services, demand for the infrastructure behind the technology is likely to increase.
