REWIRE makes remanufactured products as fast, flexible, and trusted as new ones, supporting Europe’s industrial circular transition
REWIRE is a project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101293592. The project aims to accelerate Europe’s transition to smarter, more circular manufacturing by utilising robotics, AI, digital twins and FAIR data. The project brings together industrial expertise and three Integrated Remanufacturing Demonstrators (IRDs) to demonstrate how remanufacturing can be scaled up in practice. The core principle of REWIRE is to develop a closed-loop Triage, Plan, Simulate and Assure framework. This framework is designed to provide confidence to industry, enabling fast, auditable, and standards-aligned remanufacturing decisions that reliably restore products to ‘like-new’ condition. In doing so, it aims to maximise material recovery, reduce carbon footprint, and enable scalable, interoperable deployment across sectors.
Targeting remanufacturing
The IRDs are Dromone Engineering in Ireland, Centro Ricerche Fiat in Italy, and Danfoss Power Electronics in Denmark. At Dromone, REWIRE focuses on the automated remanufacturing of earth-moving couplers, replacing a manual scrap-or-replace process with a hybrid, traceable workflow involving robotic disassembly, inspection and repair. At CRF, the project targets gearbox remanufacturing, using early-stage AI triage, digital twins and selective disassembly to improve throughput, quality and repeatability. At Danfoss, REWIRE targets the remanufacturing of power drives, using adaptive robotics and full digital traceability to recover high-value components instead of shredding them.
Remanufacturing is already a valuable practice in the circular economy because it extends product life, reduces the use of virgin materials and can lower emissions. REWIRE builds on this by creating practical tools for traceability, compliance, safety and productivity, enabling remanufactured products to be trusted by industry and customers alike. The project also includes skills development, stakeholder engagement and standardisation work, helping to ensure that the results are adopted more widely across Europe.
The consortium
The consortium brings together three RTOs, four RPOs, one NGO and five industrial partners from eight European countries to help address barriers such as poor traceability, fragmented digital systems, limited autonomous robotics, weak decision support tools and skills shortages. The project officially started in May 2026 with kick-off meetings held on 2 June and 3 June 2026 at Irish Manufacturing Research and Dromone Engineering.
