The UK and US are stepping up efforts to turn fusion from a long-term scientific ambition into a viable energy industry, with new agreements covering advanced computing, AI and regulation.

Announced at the Global Fusion Summit in London, the partnerships will bring together expertise from leading research organisations while creating closer links between the two countries as they work towards commercial fusion energy.

The first agreement will establish a supercomputing partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL).

The collaboration will combine expertise in fusion, AI and high-performance computing to tackle some of the complex scientific and engineering challenges standing in the way of commercial fusion power.

A separate UK-US Joint Statement will strengthen cooperation on fusion regulation. Greater alignment between the two countries could reduce uncertainty for developers and investors, helping companies progress from experimental projects towards commercial deployment.

The agreements are also expected to support the UK’s ambition to create more than 10,000 fusion-related jobs by 2030, while attracting investment and creating opportunities across Britain’s engineering and manufacturing supply chains.

The potential of fusion energy

Fusion is the process that powers the Sun.

Unlike conventional nuclear fission, which generates energy by splitting heavy atomic nuclei, fusion works by forcing light nuclei together. Under extreme temperatures, hydrogen isotopes can fuse to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a substantial amount of energy.

Its potential is significant. Fusion could eventually provide large quantities of electricity without producing carbon emissions during operation, while generating less long-lived radioactive waste than conventional nuclear fission.

But turning the physics into a functioning power station remains difficult. Researchers need to create and control ultra-hot plasma and produce enough energy from the reaction to make the entire process commercially worthwhile.

AI and computing could accelerate fusion

The new UK-US computing partnership is designed to address some of these challenges by bringing greater computing power and AI into fusion research.

High-performance computing can be used to model plasma behaviour, analyse experimental data and simulate the conditions inside fusion systems.

AI could help researchers identify patterns and optimise experiments more quickly, potentially reducing the time required to develop new fusion technologies.

At the same time, closer regulatory cooperation could make it easier for fusion companies to move technologies through development and towards deployment, while giving investors greater clarity over the rules governing the emerging industry.

The agreements form part of Britain’s wider strategy to establish the UK as a major centre for fusion.

UK Minister for Energy, Michael Shanks, added: “Fusion has the potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy while supporting more than 10,000 jobs across the UK by 2030, attracting investment and creating major opportunities for British businesses.

“By strengthening our partnership with the US, we’re accelerating the race to commercial fusion energy, turning cutting-edge research into economic growth and cementing Britain’s position as a world leader in fusion energy.

New investment builds Britain’s fusion supply chain

The summit has also highlighted efforts to strengthen the industrial infrastructure needed to commercialise fusion.

The University of Birmingham, the Electric Power Research Institute and industry partners have secured £2.63m for research into fusion materials.

The project will support the development of materials capable of operating in the demanding environment inside a fusion power plant, while strengthening UK engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

Japanese fusion company Kyoto Fusioneering is also planning to invest up to £3m in Britain through Project ALBION. The project will develop and test materials for STEP, the UK programme developing a prototype fusion power plant.

Together, the projects illustrate the growing international dimension of the fusion industry, with British, American, and Japanese organisations contributing expertise, investment and industrial capacity.

UK targets share of multi-trillion-pound market

The UK has published its Fusion Investment Prospectus, setting out opportunities for companies and investors and outlining how Britain intends to convert its research strengths into a domestic fusion industry.

The government estimates that the future global fusion market could be worth between £3 trillion and £12 trillion, although the scale and timing of that market remain uncertain.

For the UK, the opportunity extends beyond electricity generation. Building a domestic fusion sector could create demand for specialist engineering, materials, computing and manufacturing, allowing British companies to participate in an emerging global supply chain.

With STEP, new international partnerships and growing private-sector involvement, the UK is increasingly positioning fusion as an industrial and economic opportunity as well as a scientific one.

The latest agreements with the US add another piece to that strategy, bringing commercial fusion energy closer to the centre of Britain’s long-term energy and industrial plans.
