This video shows the real-time formation of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite quantum dots via a technique called ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP). The process involves adding a solution of methylammonium iodide, lead iodide, oleic acid, and oleylamine into a vial of rapidly stirring chloroform. When the perovskite precursors meet a liquid they are not soluble in, they rapidly assemble into luminescent nanosized crystals.
Surya Poornachandiran, a graduate student researcher at the University of Mississippi, performed the reaction; research assistant professor Dineshkumar Sengottuvelu recorded the footage. After forming the quantum dots, the researchers collected them via centrifugation and characterized them using a variety of spectroscopy and microscopy methods. Sengottuvelu says the lab is investigating the materials for optoelectronic devices, such as next-generation light-emitting diodes and photodetectors.
