Thomas L. Penner, 83, of Fairport, New York, died Feb. 20, 2026.
“Tom’s work at Kodak spanned the fields of photochemistry and materials science. His research concentrated on the photochemistry of dyes used in color photographic films. He developed methods of dye layering that are considered foundational to antenna dye sensitization, a technique used to improve the efficiency of silver halide photography. He also contributed to advancements in nonlinear optics, low loss waveguides, and inkjet technology. An avid birder with an enduring love for nature, Tom approached both his gardens and complex technical challenges with the same thoughtful patience. A generous listener, he will be deeply missed by family and colleagues.”—Eileen Bauer, daughter
