How Hexivon and Hillwood are building the infrastructure to solve PFAS contamination in the water supply— permanently

There is a quiet crisis running through the pipes of American cities. It has no colour, no smell, and no taste. You cannot see it in a glass of water or detect it without specialised laboratory equipment. But it is there — in the drinking water of communities across every region of the United States — and it has been accumulating for decades.

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a class of more than 12,000 synthetic chemicals used in industrial manufacturing, consumer products, and military firefighting foam since the 1940s. They were engineered for permanence: heat-resistant, water-resistant, and chemically stable. The same properties that made them useful in Teflon cookware, food packaging, and stain-resistant clothing make them extraordinarily dangerous in the environment. PFAS do not break down. They accumulate in soil, water, and human tissue — earning them the name “forever chemicals.”

The scale of contamination is staggering. The Environmental Working Group has identified more than 9,500 contaminated sites across all 50 states. An estimated 200 million Americans are exposed to PFAS through their drinking water. Over 700 military installations are contaminated from decades of aqueous film-forming foam — AFFF — used in firefighting. And the contamination is not historical. It is ongoing, and it is getting harder to ignore.

The regulatory reckoning

For years, PFAS contamination was treated as an emerging concern — important, but not yet regulated. That changed in April 2024, when the United States Environmental Protection Agency finalised the first-ever Maximum Contaminant Levels for PFAS in drinking water. The MCL for PFOA and PFOS — the two most studied and most prevalent PFAS compounds — was set at 4 parts per trillion. To understand how small that number is, consider that 4 parts per trillion is equivalent to four drops of water in an Olympic-size swimming pool.

The rule is not advisory. It is federal law. Water systems serving more than 25 people must comply by 2029 — a deadline that may sound distant but is, in practical terms, already here. Designing, procuring, permitting, and constructing a water treatment system takes years. Communities that are not actively moving toward compliance today will find themselves facing enforcement action, federal penalties, and significant public health liability in the years ahead.

More than 1,300 water systems across the United States have already been identified with PFAS levels above the new MCL. In Texas alone, dozens of public water systems in the Dallas-Fort Worth region have recorded detections at or above the federal limit. These are not failing systems or neglected utilities — they are communities that inherited a contamination problem created by industry and military activity over the course of generations. And they are now being asked to solve it.

The problem with existing solutions

The conventional response to PFAS contamination has relied on two primary technologies: granular activated carbon filtration and reverse osmosis membrane systems. Both are widely deployed, well-understood, and regulatory-compliant. And both share a fundamental flaw: they do not destroy PFAS. They concentrate it.

Activated carbon captures PFAS molecules on a porous carbon medium — but the carbon eventually saturates. When it does, it must be replaced and disposed of as hazardous waste. The PFAS problem has not been solved; it has been transferred to a landfill or incineration facility. Reverse osmosis concentrates PFAS into a reject stream that must also be managed, transported, and disposed of — creating secondary contamination liability that communities inherit along with the filtration system itself.

The water treatment industry has known this for years. What it has lacked is an alternative — a technology capable of achieving what filtration cannot: complete, permanent destruction of PFAS at the molecular level, without creating a secondary waste stream that perpetuates the contamination cycle. That technology now exists.

Hexivon: elimination, not filtration

Hexivon is a Dallas-based water technology company built around a single, uncompromising mission: the complete elimination of PFAS from water — not its reduction, not its relocation, but its permanent destruction. Critically, the process operates at ambient temperature and pressure — a meaningful operational advantage over energy-intensive alternatives. Lower energy requirements translate to lower operating costs and simplified infrastructure integration, making the system practical for the range of system sizes municipalities actually operate.

The technology has been validated in the field. At a Raw Water Pump Station in North Carolina — a state where Hexivon has built deep relationships and operated for many years — Hexivon’s system processed 150,000 gallons of drinking water per day — continuously — taking water contaminated at 40 parts per trillion and delivering a non-detectable result. That is not a laboratory result. It is a documented, third-party-verifiable outcome from an operational deployment in a real water system. That system has since been scaled: Hexivon’s first revenue-generating deployment is a 1.4 million-gallon-per-day system at a textile mill in South Carolina, operating under the company’s Planet Clear sub-brand for land reclamation and industrial water management.

The partnership that changes the scale question

Technology alone does not solve a national infrastructure problem. Solving PFAS contamination at the scale the crisis demands requires capital, relationships, and deployment infrastructure. It requires partners who understand how communities make decisions, how infrastructure gets financed, and how trust gets built with municipal decision-makers who are accountable to their residents.
