Diablo Canyon Power Plant receives $271m to extend operations

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) $271m to support the continued operation of the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California.

The funding is part of the federal government’s wider effort to preserve the country’s existing nuclear fleet and strengthen domestic energy security.

The investment will help PG&E maintain the plant’s two reactors, supporting equipment upgrades, reactor component replacements and fuel procurement. It will also help address unexpected costs associated with extending the facility’s operations.

The result is a significant boost for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which supplies nearly 10% of California’s electricity. The funding will help maintain a reliable source of low-carbon power while supporting thousands of well-paid jobs in the surrounding region.

Ted Garrish, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, highlighted the plant’s strategic importance: “Keeping Diablo Canyon online is critical to meeting California’s growing demand for affordable, reliable, and secure electricity.

“The Civil Nuclear Credit Program is helping preserve this vital source of baseload power and ensuring that we don’t prematurely take reliable generation off the grid.

“The DOE is committed to unleashing American nuclear energy and keeping facilities like Diablo Canyon operating safely and reliably for the American people.”

Diablo Canyon secures longer-term future

The funding follows a decision by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in April to approve 20-year licence extensions for Diablo Canyon’s two reactors. The units had originally been scheduled to close by 2025.

Their continued operation has been supported through the Civil Nuclear Credit Program, a federal initiative designed to prevent the premature closure of existing nuclear facilities that remain strategically important to the US power system.

Under the programme, PG&E could ultimately receive up to $1.1bn for work required to keep Diablo Canyon operating safely and reliably.

Why the US is backing nuclear infrastructure

The investment in the Diablo Canyon Power Plant also highlights the broader importance of reinforcing America’s nuclear infrastructure.

The US nuclear fleet provides a substantial share of the country’s reliable electricity without producing direct carbon emissions during generation.

Keeping existing reactors operational can therefore help maintain grid stability while reducing the need to replace their output with fossil fuel generation.

Supporting established plants also protects specialised nuclear expertise, skilled jobs and critical infrastructure that can take decades and significant investment to rebuild.

As electricity demand grows, particularly from data centres, manufacturing and electrification, retaining existing nuclear capacity could become increasingly important.

The Diablo Canyon funding represents both an energy security measure and a commitment to preserving America’s existing nuclear capabilities.

For California, it provides additional certainty over one of its most important sources of dependable electricity.
