India has marked a significant milestone in clean energy innovation with the launch of the world’s first nuclear-powered hydrogen production facility based on the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) thermochemical cycle.

The demonstration plant, located at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam, integrates nuclear process heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) to generate hydrogen without relying on fossil fuels.

The facility was inaugurated by Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, alongside IGCAR Director Shri Sreekumar G. Pillai.

Developed through a collaboration between the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and IGCAR, the project represents a major advance in India’s clean energy and nuclear research programmes.

By successfully coupling nuclear reactor heat with hydrogen generation, the initiative demonstrates the potential for large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen production.

The achievement positions India at the forefront of advanced hydrogen technologies while showcasing a new pathway for producing clean hydrogen using next-generation nuclear reactors.

Demonstrating a new approach to nuclear-powered hydrogen production

The newly commissioned plant has been established as a technology demonstrator to validate the Cu-Cl thermochemical process, an innovative hydrogen production method developed by BARC.

Unlike conventional hydrogen production, which often depends on natural gas and generates significant carbon emissions, the Cu-Cl process harnesses high-temperature nuclear heat to drive a series of chemical reactions that split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Because the process operates at lower temperatures than many alternative thermochemical cycles, it offers improved efficiency while reducing engineering challenges.

The successful integration of the Cu-Cl process with heat supplied by the FBTR demonstrates that advanced nuclear facilities can support continuous, carbon-free hydrogen production, offering an alternative to conventional methods that rely on fossil fuels.

The transformative potential of the Cu-Cl thermochemical cycle

Hydrogen is widely recognised as a critical component of the global transition to low-carbon energy. It has applications across heavy industry, transport, electricity storage and chemical manufacturing, but producing it sustainably remains one of the sector’s biggest challenges.

The Cu-Cl thermochemical cycle has attracted growing interest because of its combination of relatively low operating temperatures and favourable thermodynamic efficiency.

Using nuclear heat rather than burning fossil fuels significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions while improving the overall energy efficiency of hydrogen production.

The new demonstration facility will allow researchers to evaluate long-term operational performance, refine the technology and generate data needed to support future commercial-scale deployment of nuclear-powered hydrogen production systems.

Building on decades of nuclear research

The project represents the culmination of years of research, engineering design, equipment fabrication, installation and commissioning carried out jointly by BARC and IGCAR.

Established in 1971, IGCAR has played a central role in India’s fast breeder reactor programme. Its Fast Breeder Test Reactor has operated for more than four decades, providing researchers with a platform to develop reactor fuels, advanced materials and sodium-based technologies.

The expertise gained through FBTR has also contributed to the development of India’s 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), a key element of the country’s long-term three-stage nuclear power strategy.

Beyond reactor development, IGCAR has built internationally recognised capabilities in reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, advanced materials, instrumentation, fuel cycle research, remote handling technologies and high-temperature engineering, strengthening India’s domestic nuclear technology base.

Supporting India’s low-carbon energy ambitions

The inauguration of the demonstration plant reflects the Department of Atomic Energy’s broader strategy of combining indigenous nuclear innovation with emerging clean energy technologies.

If successfully scaled, nuclear-powered hydrogen production could help supply reliable, carbon-free hydrogen for industrial processes and other hard-to-decarbonise sectors while complementing renewable energy sources.

The project also reinforces India’s ambition to expand its leadership in advanced nuclear technology while supporting national goals for energy security, technological self-reliance and long-term decarbonisation.

By proving the feasibility of integrating nuclear reactors with hydrogen generation, the new facility could provide an important foundation for future commercial hydrogen production using advanced nuclear systems.
